[OS X TeX] pdflatex: Too many open files problem

Greetings  - 

I'm getting a "too many open files" when processing a document with
many, many included graphics (435 to be exact - .png graphics of
scanned book pages).  I read a few articles about this and though it
had been fixed.  Is there any way around this issue (other than not
including so many graphics)?  I'm using OS 10.3.7 and pdftex -v says:

pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.20b-rc5-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)
kpathsea version 3.5.3
