Thanks for your efforts, but I presume I'm too dumd to run it.  The document

\documentclass[12pt,twoside]{report}
\begin{document}
alpha
\end{document}

followed by F2 produces the

  alertnote "Error: Failed to build custom format"  \
	      "Make sure that the document compiles normally without 
flash mode, \
	      and that it does not source other files in its directory."
	    error "Failed to build custom format"
