Well, you are quite right that I keep my hand installed material away 
from fink and apple, and that /LibraryApplication Support/Emacs would 
do the same.

It's just that I have quite a bit of hand installed material and 
/usr/local is made for this.

However, now that you mention it, and I have hand-compiled an Emacs.app 
from the CVS repository (without all the extra packages that this new 
Carbon Emacs that we've been talking about includes), I might just go 
that way. With the anti-aliasing built into these CVS versions, I don't 
even want to use an X11 emacs.
