This is indeed the end of the dental problem!
Plus, I learned what % at the end of a line means which I had long 
wondered about.

And, comparing with Sneep's solution, I deduce that

\leftmargin =  -14.22636pt

P. S. Re. Sneep's

which is about as plain TeX as you can get."

I did not know it was as this was given to me "as is" in response to a 
query of how to indent paragraphs within asparaenum. Other than that I 
will deny any knowledge of glue.
