Sorry for bothering everybody, it was my mistake. The variable is o.k.
What happened is that when I copied my home folder to the server, the
Finder obviously skipped some files. The texmf folder was copied, but
not all subdirectories!? So some of the required files were missing. I
copied them, and everything works fine now.
