[OS X TeX] TeX "Alternatives" FAQ?

While the discussion on word processors might be OT, the matter of
integrating TeX with other programs and/or finding alternatives to a
pure TeX system are definitely on-topic, IMHO.
In fact, Wolfram's Publicon sounds quite on-topic. Same with LyX,
Scientific Assistant, TeXtures(??), etc.
Anyone has a good resource comparing these applications and others for
academic publishing or other forms of document creation?
We probably have all been looking for the academic killer app. For many
of us, that app needs to have some form of TeX implementation and/or
pathway toward/from TeX. Maybe through XML formats, including
specialized XML specs (MathML, MusiXML, BibML...).
Instead of all be looking at the same time, maybe someone could lead us
to some sort of FAQ about this? "Academic documents on Mac OS X: The
TeX Enthusiast Version"

Thanks in advance for your help!
