[OS X TeX] Can I Make Pdftricks Even Faster?

Howdy,

Does altpdflatex exist on all TeX distributions (e.g. TeXLive, teTeX,
MikTeX) or is it teTeX only, Mac only (including Fink) or gwTeX only?

Is there an easy way to tell, from within LaTeX, if the distribution has
altpdflatex? Will 
\IfFileExists{/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/altpdflatex}
{}{} do the job?

That would be a very fast way to process the *-fig*.tex files produced by
pdftricks.sty into .pdf's (using batchmode) and then using pdfcrop would set
the proper BoundingBox.
