You need to over-ride the default which is set to make a .pdf ---
pdftex is perfectly capable of making a .dvi, that's what was done for
_The LaTeX Companion 2nd Edition_ to get margin kerning, yet still
allow PostScript specials &c. to work.
add the line
\pdfoutput=0
in your preamble, and set \pdffalse and be sure to use options
appropriate to whatever .dvi driver your selecting.
