The usual ones. For instance, say you want to compare something on page
131 with something on page 243. You split the window and scroll one pane
to page 131 and the other to page 243. Occasionally, though, this is not
stable and when, say, you paste, you may have some disconcerting
automatic scrolling. Or at least there used to.
For my part, I am not using split windows very much in TeXShop as I am
using the pdf sync to navigate and the split windows are too small. But,
say in Excel, no going around it.
