[OS X TeX] pdf font coding problems

You can save a file with a .dot from Text Edit. You will be warned that
the file is hidden, but you can do it.

The better way is to go into Terminal and type "nano .MacOSX." This will
create a text file called .MacOSX in your home directory. Type in
whatever you need to, press command-x, then y (to save the file) and you
are done.
