[OS X TeX] pdf font coding problems

I gues Illustrator converts pdf to bitmaps to be able to work on a pdf. 
This makes a pdf-file worse per definition. Do you get any better result 
when opening a pdf /not/ created by pdfTeX?
Otherwise I'd say the question is neither OS X not TeX related.
