[OS X TeX] manually updating things installed by iInstaller or not?

That depends on how fast there is a new teTeX release. I have no idea
when that is going to be.

Yes.

No.
The ConTeXt updater works the same way. It installs in texmf.local
and if you remove it there the old one is active again. ~/Library/
texmf is found before anything else.
