Lots of activity here while I was just out for lunch...
On my fink-installed system, things (including the symlinks) seem to
look quite different, so I can't help with anything inside your
/usr/bin/teTeX/ directory - but it still appears that the actual
problem is outside of that directory. Do you, by any chance, have a
directory .texmf-var or .texmf-conf or something like that in your home
directory (do ls -al and look for things starting with .tex*)? If so,
you could try to move these out of the way (copy them to something that
doesn't start with a dot, e.g.)
That's less radical than to start a new account...
