[OS X TeX] documentclass undefined

This is not true, at least through 10.3 (maybe it changed in 10.4, 
don't remember, haven't upgraded). OS X is case preserving, not case 
sensitive. E.g:

cascade:~ goedde$ cd /usr/local
cascade:/usr/local goedde$ ls
bin
libexec
man
mysql
mysql-standard-4.0.22-apple-darwin7.5.0-powerpc
share
teTeX
cascade:/usr/local goedde$ cd tetex
cascade:/usr/local/tetex goedde$ ls
bin             info            man             share           
texmf.cnf
