It seems pdfTeX from Web2C 7.5.2 (at the time, I think, when TeX and  
pdfTeX were still separate programs) is about twice as fast as pdfTeX  
from thelatest Web2C:

- On your 1GHz 1GB PowerBook 15" you get about 14s user+sys with  
Web2C 7.5.2.

- On my 1GHz 1GB PowerBook 17" I got about 29s user+sys earlier today  
with Web2C 7.5.5.

Or it may be due to different versions of OS X (I'm running 10.4.2).
