[OS X TeX] STIX Fonts

A while ago I noticed on a random page on the internet that there is
soon (September) to be a release of a new set of (opentype) fonts
that will handle most (as in AIP/APS/OPS/AMS) typesetting needs.
This project has been apparently brewing for some time and seems to
be suggested by Elsevier and includes the AIP/ACS/AMS/IEEE and APS.
They intend to make the fonts available free to all users. (From the
web site -- "Toward this purpose, the STIX fonts will be made
available, under royalty-free license, to anyone, including
publishers, software developers, scientists, students, and the
general public.") It would appear that the fonts are copyrighted for
protection of the name and users are free to imbed the fonts in their
pdf documents etc.. The main goal appears to have a complete set of
freely available fonts that (subset unicode) and allow scientific
interchange (hence the interests of the APS/AIP/AMS). Of course it
would be wonderful to have a complete set of fonts in teTeX. From
the site it would appear that there are now a total of 7,967 glyphs
and the beta will come out in September and a release in December (of
course such things change). Any word/opinion on this font package
and its (beneficial) impact on laTeX?
