Well, it turns out to be a totally different problem: to have access
to the online scientific periodical collection of my university's
library, I need to specify a proxy auto-config server; and suddenly
yesterday at some point this server has started preventing Safari
users from reading web pages. Not really preventing, but making very
sloooooow: even the home page of my department (on the same LAN)
takes about 3 mins to display. This only affects Safari, not Firefox,
Mozilla, Camino, Explorer or Opera. As soon as the proxy-auto config
is disabled, things work fine. I have contacted the library computer
help desk, and am waiting for the response.
