Howdy,

Although I haven't had a chance to test it yet I think the suggestion  
made by Johan Almqvist might just work!

I'm going to make the latex engine line (using latex+dvips+distiller):

GS_OPTIONS="-dAutoRotatePages=/None" ; altpdflatex --maxpfb

and see if that works. I'm only concerned that altpdftlatex writes  
over GD_OPTIONS so I'll have to take a look at that.
