There used to be a bug in Tiger which made it behave wrongly if there
were two Spotlight importers claiming the same UTI on the same setup.
I don't know whether it's been fixed in 10.4.2.

Adam said in a thread "[OS X TeX] What happened to the BibTeX
SpotLight importer" on 20 July that he hoped the importer to make it
to the MacTeXToolbox site <http://mactextoolbox.sourceforge.net/>,
but it doesn't seem to be there already.
