You can use \mathcal{E}_1 which is the current LaTeX syntax.
But also the template contains:
\usepackage{times}
\usepackage{mathptm}
which is obsolete and should be replaced with:
\usepackage{mathptmx}
With these two changes it works.
In fact all the templates probably should be updated.
