Speaking of which: earlier today, I met for the first time EPS files
defeating Ghostscript's EPS -> PDF conversion capabilities. The same
happens with GS 8.51, which I just installed.
These are EPS files apparently created by Photoshop CS on a Mac, since
the files begin with garble like:
> ÅÐÓÆ# _Ý z# ÿÿII* þ q

When I drag them onto TeXShop to have them converted to PDF (calling
epstopdf calling ps2pdf calling Ghostscript), I end up with PDF files
of reasonable size but incorrect bounding box (the graphical content of
each EPS file ends up, in the PDF, in the lower left corner of a blank
A4 page).
When I open the EPS files in Preview and save them as PDF (calling
Panther's distiller pstopdf), I end up with a PDF of correct bounding
box but huge size.
What works is opening the original EPS files in Illustrator 10, saving
them from Illustrator as EPS files and then dragging these new EPS
files onto TeXShop. In this way the PDF files have correct bounding box
and reasonable size.
Specifically, for an EPS file of 324 KB, the size of the PDF files is:
- Using GS: 156 KB (but incorrect BB)
- Using Preview: 3.8 MB (but correct BB)
- Using Illustrator then GS: 156 KB (and correct BB)
Does this mean epstopdf should not be used as is in this case, but by
passing on some options to GS? I tried:
> Portable-de-Bruno:~/Desktop/Logos/UJF/EPS/LogoBaseDroit brunovoisin$
> epstopdf --exact UJFquadriDroit.eps
> ==> Warning: BoundingBox not found!
and similarly:
> Portable-de-Bruno:~/Desktop/Logos/UJF/EPS/LogoBaseDroit brunovoisin$
> epstopdf --hires UJFquadriDroit.eps
> ==> Warning: BoundingBox not found!
