*This* is precisely what my suggestion fixes: my \small is *outside*
math mode!! I am afraid you *did not try* my suggestion, just it
*seemed* similar to what you had been trying... Before making my
suggestion (although I *knew* it works) I opened a new document and
tried it, all the variants I suggested...
