[OS X TeX] Fonts Problem???

Hello,
A two-page document using textpos, fancybox and minipages looks fine in
TeXShop viewer and Preview, but in Reader 602 on Windows, the fonts on
page 1 look "chunky". Readers in the field say sometimes the chunky
fonts are on page 2, but not page 1. Cool, huh?
The document uses these fonts:
\usepackage{charter}
\usepackage{courier}
\usepackage{helvet}
But the problem is the same using Bookman instead of charter or
commenting out the fonts packages and using just the CM fonts.
TeX is configured to embed fonts in the PDF output. (BTW, the PDF grows
in size by ~20-25K when embedding the fonts. Is that about right?)
It's typeset using pdfTeX.
Typesetting with TeX + Ghostscript makes the font problem *appear* to
go away, but totally ignores the top and bottom margins set using
geometry.sty. It's like it's using A4 for typesetting dimensions and
letterpaper for the paper size. It just chops off the stuff at the top
and bottom.
Any suggestions?
