I agree here - XHTML+CSS (there's XML again!) is shaping up to be a 
very flexible format for achieving "non-fixed" layouts in very diverse 
situations. Save TeX for those occasions when you know the size of your 
layout and you don't need real-time output.

On the general subject, I still believe that there are great strides 
that can be made unifying the huge number of packages required for a 
basic LaTeX setup; and I believe there is still a very large scope for 
editor innovations for displaying the text-only logical content of our 
documents.
