It turns out pressing the "Reset" button at this stage cures this: the
choice of patterns is reset to the default of US English, French,
German (both spellings) and No Hyphen. Still, I don't understand why
most patterns had been selected before that, as I had just uninstalled
everything beforehand, precisely to start with as vanilla a
configuration as possible.

Does not happen any more, after doing the above.
