Almost. The default is [tbp], (apparently this is more common in 
publishing), but as I found out recently, can be changed to [htbp] in 
your document with
    \makeatletter
    \renewcommand\fps at figure{htbp}
    \makeatother
in your preamble. (We've strayed a bit from beginners territory!)

One last note: the order of the letter is irrelevant, so [pbth] is the 
same as [htbp].
