Keynote needs a lot of work but it is already so far ahead of ppt it's 
not funny.  I get ppt slides from Windows machines daily, and none of 
them work correctly, and trying to actually view them with the ppt 
client is a joke.
Windows and MS Office are the antithesis of interoperability.

As for the original topic, I work with many co-authors as well and one 
author controls the actual document format and the others contribute, 
so whoever is the lead decides what text formatting program to use.  I 
would love to see 16-bit in LaTeX even if it was only Mac-specific. 
XeTeX is the most promising choice.  It certainly can't handle 
production typesetting, and I doubt Johnathon wants to focus on this 
aspect, so some manner of taking the XeTeX technology and bringing into 
the main line would be required.
