I discuss this all somewhat in my TUG2003 paper --- it'll be out in the 
next TUGboat, but the preprint is on-line now (has been for a while).

I'll be up-dating the files to work w/ Aleph and putting them on CTAN 
presently --- anyone who wishes can try them out then.

That's a much better route I believe. It does make a job OS (and OS / 
font version) dependent, but who here is planning on switching?

The one drawback is one can't access arbitrary glyphs for an OpenType 
font (yet). See a post on my ``One Typeface: many fonts'' booklet where 
I show a work-around.

You can make a XeTeX generated .pdf pre-press ready by dumping to 
PostScript and re-distilling --- that's what we did for the Apple thank 
you in the 2003 proceedings issue.
