In addition to other suggestions, you might be interested in DrawAt 
from <http://www.enseeiht.fr/~douze/drawat/>.  I have installed the 
Latin Modern fonts so they're available system-wide, which also means 
that I can place TeX text on figures in programs like Create and 
OmniGraffle (both of which work well with Equation Service).
