Maybe you should use the theorem environment only for Methods, Results 
and Discussion

\newtheorem{meth}{subsection}{Methods}
\newtheorem{res}{subsection}{Results}
\newtheorem{disc}{subsection}{Discussion}

with appropriate text formatting.
