[OS X TeX] latest pdftex DVI vs PDF mode

With the recent gwTeX distribution (TeXLive 2004, teTeX 3), pdf is the 
output even for the simple command `` latex '' (in the shell, for 
example). As I use Kile when making correcctions in order to use 
forward and backward search, I had to put in the ``Compile tools'' 
section:

latex -output-format dvi '%S.tex'

and the log reads

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.20a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)
output format initialized to DVI
entering extended mode
...

I get exactly the same result with

pdflatex -output-format dvi '%S.tex'
