The syntax of kpsewhich has changed betweeen older and newer versions of 
texexec. Thus the problem Steffen is having can be explained by an older 
version of kpsewhich sitting on his PATH, perhaps in /usr/local/bin.

which kpsewhich
and
kpsewhich --version

should show if this is the case.
