Martin is suggesting you use Terminal.app rather than the terminal 
window in X11. Add `export DISPLAY:0' to your .profile. This will allow 
you to open X11 apps from your Terminal.app window. (You must have the 
X11 application open for this to work.) All of your paths should be 
correct from there, so you don't (shouldn't) have to mess with 
anything.
