[OS X TeX] dvips issue: j0 (jzero) necessary

The option -j0 means to include the whole font into the PS output, a 
very reasonable concept, and I think the one that pdftex follows. If 
the font has some special encoding this encoding would be needed in any 
case, for the complete and for the partial inclusion of the font too.

pdftex does not use special map or encoding files, it uses those that 
are supplied for dvips.

This is a bit Schroedinger: can be *EXPERIMENTAL*, can be not ...


In either case: you don't save much when you have a document of more 
than 1,000 pages with a partial download (inclusion) of the fonts used. 
(We could continue to work on this problem outside this list. Could you 
send me a log from dvips with and without -j0 and from pdftex? Would 
like to do a comparison ...)
