I know. I have an Intl. English keyboard, set to the US keyboard layout.
To my surprise it worked for me in TeXShop, and on a second try: in 
TextEdit
as well. I must add that this is *after* using the control-v shortcut, 
so
maybe that somehow changes the meaning of the option key.

Emacs users may be able to suggest the "Esc whatever" combination, I'm 
not an
emacs user, but it certainly pays to know a few of them (the BBEdit 
'exchange
characters' command is tied to ctrl-T, I love it in Mail, and have even 
changed
the default binding in BBEdit to C-t from the old cmd-`).
