[OS X TeX] Bibliography as endnotes

Hi --

I have, in a chapter, several \cites and \bibitems.

If I use \thebibliography, I get white spaces between the items, a 
newpage, and a new header Bibliography, while I want them all to appear 
at the end of the chapter, like endnotes, no new page, and the running 
chapter header.

 From the Companion, I get the impression that this is possible with 
natbib, but then I'd have to change all my bibitems to author-date 
form. Or is there another trick?
