Because it sets the bounding box to the tightest bounding box around 
the contents of the page, without fiddling with numbers. Actually, the 
second use is much more important for met: replacing the fonts with 
their outlines (using the -dNOCACHE option of gs) for submitting 
metapost based figures for publication.
