You're right it does require the (pdflatex) option --shell-escape.
With that option though it seems to work fine.

I do have fink installed but I don't really use it and I tried to run
pdflatex whithout 'source /sw/fink/bin.init.sh' in my
'rc.mine' file. It still worked.
