[OS X TeX] latex: do not disrupt

Hi List!

How do I keep LaTeX from disrupting my words? I need some words to not 
be broken over two lines. I tried to use the following:

this is the word that should not be {disrupted}
and it didn't work, I also tried to use~between words, but that didn't 
help either..

Does anyone know a solution for this?
