[OS X TeX] Unable to install TeX Foundation and Programs

Additional information:  It *seems like* the configuration stops on one
of the first 'grep's in the configuration perlscript: here is an excerpt
from a regular 'top':

As indicated, the PID of the configuration script is 23102, then there
are two 'sh's and one 'grep' -- and then no other process before the
Preview that I started later.
