pdftosrc is part of pdfTeX, if it is not available in the OS X 
version, we need to request the maintainers to provide it.
   
   The question is, whether this can be made a MaxOS X Service item,
   so you can select a formerly typeset equation, choose the "pdf ->
   tex" service which I am suggesting to get back the source, modify
   it and re-typeset it using the already existing service "TeX to
   PDF" (GWTeXServices) or "Equation Service -> ..." (Doug
   Rowland's).

Well, this should be nice for OS X users. But I am not an OS X man,
my primary operating system is GNU/Linux and I am quite comfortable
with shell and the command line. 

For me, it is much easier to keep an index of text objects
(something like a TOC of text sources of all equations) in the pdf
file automatically while it is generated with pdfLaTeX, grab this
index of equation texts, find the right text object I need to
extract and modify, extract, edit, save, recompile to get the new
pdf. A carefully written Makefile will accomplish all the above and
it is trivial. This is only a personal approach that might be good
for me alone, cause is that I have found interfaces a huge hindrance
in the process automation at my work.

This opens up other possibilities of embedding the gif/jpg/tiff/pdf
images and eps's of equations as unused objects inside the pdf
document automatically. This could be helpful to grab the required
graphic file format for reusage in some other application that
doesn't support TeX sources directly.
