[OS X TeX] quartz and pdftex?

Sure it does---just look at the ``PDFCompositor.app'' demo. I think it
cheated by rasterizing the graphics and using OpenGL though.

Well, one'd have to set up a colour model to handle this---easier though
to just do it as a graphic and feed it in as a .pdf---should survive
that okay. Might even be able to put a transparent object over text set
by pdftex.

Why would these be directly compatible?

Best thing one could do would be to use ID for those things it makes
sense for (say laying out title and copyright pages which don't need to
be repeated a lot (contrary example would be a large series)), and TeX
for what it makes sense for (highly structured stuff wanting indexing,
glossaries, etc.), and combine the pages as .pdfs using either pdfpages,
or Adobe Acrobat, the full version.
