sympathise with the not being a Unix power user.

Fink however is pretty understandable. It's a utility for installing Unix 
programs / packages (needless technical detail - using Debian's ``apt-get'
' system). It can be d/l'd and installed from www.sourceforge.net (do a 
search on ``fink'').

Once it's installed, you just need to enter the command line, ``fink 
install detex'' (assuming that it's a package unto itself---the fink docs 
will explain whether or no that's the case)
