[Mac OS X TeX] Excalibur and TeXShop '.tex' files

I'm baffled. TeXShop '.tex' files are just plain text, aren't
they? So why won't Excalibur 4 (running under OS X, not
classic) open them to spell check? If I drag them onto the
Excalibur icon, Excalibur launches, but the files don't open,
and I can't open them from the "open" menu item, either (they
are grayed out in the open dialog). What gives?
