In my experience psfrag only works reliably with one-letter tags. 
Illustrator, for example, separates each letter of a tag in the EPS 
output it produces, in which case psfrag cannot do its magic.

In any case, with PDF gradually replacing EPS format, I've given up on 
psfrag.
