They're ignored for me (along with \documentclass, etc).

Perhaps you forgot to check the TeX filter in the cocoaAspell preferences?

The behaviour you are seeing is compatible with that option being 
unchecked.

[Personally, I had trouble with cocoaAspell until I remembered to include 
it among the  login items in the Login PreferencePane. After that, it has 
worked flawlessly.]
