It could be either, but the latter is certainly true.  Adding the correct 
events shouldn't be that hard, assuming that that service can actually deal 
with apple-events.  In Alpha(tk) it is as simple as adding to these two arrays:

array set spellCheckAppSignatures {
     Excalibur XCLB
}

array set spellCheckAppScripts {
     Excalibur {
         {sendOpenEvent noReply $quotedSig $filename}
     }
}

which are currently only set up for Excalibur.
