Hi -
I am using the "seminar" package to create slides, and am having some
difficulty in generating landscape slides -- I've tried this in both
CMacTeX and TeXShop on OSX.
The problem is that the pages show up in portrait mode, with the right
part of the landscape page chopped off. This is true for all cases:
.dvi, .ps, and .pdf.
I have tried various variants and combinations of the following:
\documentclass[slidesonly,landscape]{seminar}
%\documentclass[slidesonly]{seminar}
\renewcommand{\printlandscape}{\special{landscape}}
%\def\printlandscape{\special{landscape}}
Before this I was successfully able to generate landscape slides using
OzTeX on OS 9 -- but in order to get landscape slides, I had to go into
the dvi previewer, switch the view to landscape mode, and then run
dvips. I don't find an equivalent step when using either CMacTeX or
TeXShop.
Any thoughts appreciated .. thanks in advance.

Have yo tried to create pdf with pdflatex and then use Acrobat to view?

Yes I've tried pdflatex too, with the same results.
Moreover, I prefer the dvips - ps2pdf route, since I use the hyperref
package and it produces great hyperlinks within the pdf file. (pdftex
doesn't do that, right?)

Quite wrong.
hyperref works perfectly with pdflatex .
Indeed, there are may be some features that only pdflatex can provide.
To get your slides to show as landscape orientation
on a landscape page, you need some code that sets
the \pdfpagewidth and \pdfpageheight correctly.
This should happen with \usepackage{hyperref} .
It doesn't happen automatically in older LaTeX macro
packages, since they were not written with PDF in mind.
Note that 'landscape' for dvips and printed pages means
'rotate the text' to fit on the page.
Whereas with PDF it is the underlying white rectangle representing
the page that needs to be rotated, or specified with a different
size to a normal portrait page.
If hyperref, or your LaTeX documentclass doesn't get it right
automatically, then you can do it yourself, using:
\AtBeginDocument{%
\pdfpageheight = \paperheight
\pdfpagewidth = \paperwidth
}
or
\AtBeginDocument{%
\pdfpageheight = \paperwidth
\pdfpagewidth = \paperheight
}
One of these should work.
Which one, may depend upon what other macro packages
have been loaded.

Did you try Acrobat 5 (and maybe 4) for displaying? It sounds silly, but
the fllowing modes of viewing PDF
differ on Mac OS X:
1 - Cocoa apps on Mac OS X (TeXShop, Preview)
2 - Carbon apps on Mac OS X (Acrobat 5)
3 - Carbon apps (Acrobat 5) on Mac OS 9 or Classic apps (Acrobat 4)
either on OS 9 or Classic under OS X
The list is in decreasing display niceness and increasing functionality.
I.e. buttons and links do not work at all in 1 and perfectly in 3.
Quartz has various bug and incompleteness issues, hence the problems
with 1. But thinking about it a bit more, I think landscape vs portrait
is not one of those problems, so it is a tex issue.
(Dynamic presentations, though, only display well with Acrobat 4 under
Classic or Acrobat 5 under OS 9. To prevent the rebooting, I have
installed Acrobat 4.05 on my system as well.)

I have installed he new teTeX and have run into a strange, but
serious, problem.
I have been typesetting using pdftex ever since I first installed
TeXShop + pdftex. In doing so, when including figures I have been
using the graphicx package and PDF figures. When saving PDF files out
of Illustrator, the image is saved on a full page so I have to open
the figure in a text editor (BBEdit) to determine the bounding box.
After doing this, I have been including the figures using a commands
like:
\usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx}
\DeclareGraphicsExtensions{.pdf}
\includegraphics[viewport=147 318 388 396]{figurename}
where the numbers 136 326 478 618 are extracted from the the PDF file
from the line:
%%BoundingBox: 147 318 388 396
[Aside: I initially tried using bb=136 326 478 618 as the option to
\includegraphics, but LaTeX substituted viewport, so I just started
using viewport. This is also odd.]
The problem is this: the dozens documents of files that used to work
perfectly when I used the above procedure no longer work since
installing the new teTeX. It looks like the figures are being
included, but I am seeing, at best, only a small part of the image
itself. Usually, I see nothing. It is as if LaTeX is ignoring the
viewport setting I am giving it.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior with the new teTeX? What can I do
to fix this new problem? Help!!! :-(

Yes I'm having exactly the same problem with a figure included using the
graphicx package and:
\includegraphics[bb=0 0 380 380]{figurename.pdf}
The figure doesn't show up at all, in either TeXShop, Preview or Acrobat
Reader 5 (and Mac OS X 10.1). With the previous teTeX, everything was
fine.
If I switch to the TeX + GhostScript route, using the EPS original of
the figure (from which the PDF version was created), then everything is
back to normal: I see the figure in my LaTeX document.
If I remove the bb specification and still use pdfTeX, then everything
is normal again.
Could this be connected to the upgraded pdfTeX in the new teTeX?
On your other topic, converting Illustrator files to PDF, here's what
works for me: I usually create EPSs from Mathematica 4.1 and open them
in Illustrator 8 (for adding labels annotations etc.). If I would save
them as PDFs from Illustrator, then the PDFs would, as for you, have the
full page size. However, by saving them as EPSs from Illustrator, then
opening them with MacGSView 2.0b3, and saving them as PDFs at this stage
only, I get PDFs with the proper size.
At one point I thought it was necessary to use MacGS 5.5 instead of
MacGSView 2.0b3, but now the latter seems to work quite fine.

At least I am not alone. :-)
Am I to understand that if you remove the bb optiop altogether, then
it works again as before? If I do that, I can see the figures, but
not as before. There still seems to be some problem.

My experience with pdfTeX under Unix (from before TeXshop arrived,
and subsequently) is that the viewport = .... option
to \includegraphics (from graphicx package) only works properly
in conjunction with the 'clip' option.
You must use (something like):
\includegraphics[viewport= llx lly urx ury,clip]{myimage}
to get just the desired portion of the image showing.
If you omit the 'clip' then I think the intention is for the
whole image to show, allowing the rest of the text on the page to
overlay the image; but positioned so that the viewport region is
prominent. (However, with large images, I've never seen this
working properly.)

With no bb= or viewport= or trim= then the default should be as before.
All size information needs to be deduced from the image file being
included. It should be only when you wish for something other than
this that things can go wrong in the LaTeX coding; or rather,
the TeX coding in graphicx.sty or pdftex.def .
