I've used pStill almost exclusively for creating .pdfs for my personal
stuff (see my portfolio page at http://members.aol.com/willadams for
samples) and've had good luck with it. It's free for NeXTstep users now,
but I was very glad to be able to license it when it first came out.
It's also free for personal / academic use on Linux.

With some fonts (e.g. Octavian), TeX/dvips does do a rather odd trick of
handling character kerning and encoding in one step, which trips up the
pStill PostScript interpreter. Frank Siegert, the author of pStill
(www.wizards.de/~frank) was kind enough to provide me with a snippet of
PS code which fixes this. Not sure if that's necessary with the Mac OS X
version or no.
