I've been looking for a way to migrate my LaTeX work from a linux
machine to my MacOS X machine, and I was happy to learn about the
current version of CMacTeX and associated utilities. I've got it all
set up, but I can't understand why it's focused on BBEdit as the
editor. I've never used BBEdit before, and I just downloaded and set
up the demo, but as far as i can see, this editor provides next to no
support for editing LaTeX files. Yes, it does some syntax coloring,
and by compiling the scripts provided with CMacTeX it's possible to
call TeX, ghostscript, BibTeX, etc. But there's no help that I can
find for inserting all of the repetitive stuff that I'm used to having
AUCtex do for me in xemacs. Alpha provides vastly more LaTeX support,
I think, but then even the latest version of alpha doesn't run
natively under OS X, and I think the facility for going from a line in
the formatted version to the corresponding place in the source file
only works with BBEdit....

I have to think there's more to BBEdit thatn I can see. What do people
use to make this into a real, functional editor for LaTeX source?

Worse for me is the fact the BBedit doesn't support emacs bindings.
Alpha seemed more promising to me. I have actually hacked up a TeX editor
based on Fred, the emacs-like editor that comes with MCL (Macintosh
Common Lisp). It doesn't (currently) do syntax coloring, but it does
do lots of the repetitive stuff for you, as well as some more subtle
things, like unobtrusive
word completion, navigation with a labels list, drag and drop copying
and moving, and other things. It also coordinates with TeXtures
source-dvi synchronization in both directions. I can't live without
it.
However, this is, I'm afraid off topic for this list, because for the
time being, it doesn't run under OSX, even in Classic compatibility
mode,
and also I don't have a license to distribute it. (Although it might
be okay to let some people test it.)

You have to add an entry for each one tp FontMap.GS and place (or symlink) the fonts in ghostscript's font folder. The fonts must be in pfb format.

I've never used Illustrator. Are you sure the problem lies in the pdf graphics
and not in the way pdftex is including them? If someone can send me a sample
eps I can see what happens with the latest pdftex.

>Also the only

It's a feature, not a bug. I recently changed some parts of epstopdf so
that a user could drop multiple eps files onto it and epstopdf would
convert each one in turn. I forgot to reactivate some code in the program
so that the Menus don't work. Since I always activate epstopdf by dropping
eps files onto it I never noticed that the menus didn't work. I will fix
it soon.

I may be completely wrong here, but it is my understanding that eps files
should not contain fonts. It is the job of dvips and pdftex to read the
eps or pdf file and supply the fonts itself.

The only reason I have focused on BBEdit is that BBEdit is Carbon.
I have encountered major problems trying to send Apple Events to
classic applications when running OS X. Even simple Apple Scripts
that run perfectly in OS 9 break in OS X. Apple has a lot of work
to do in this area. At least the current OS X is much better in these
respects than OS X Public Beta.

If you run CMacTeX in OS 9 then you can use either BBEdit or Alpha
and they have exactly the same interaction with CMacTeX. When Alpha
is Carbonized you should be able to switch to it without my making
any changes to CMacTeX. That is, if the Alpha people don't make any
incompatible changes.

I refuse to enter any discussion about the relative merits and/or demerits
of these two programs.

The command

%%DocumentFonts:

states what fonts the document requires and

%%DocumentSuppliedFonts:

states which if any of those are contained in the document.

A quick test seems to indicate that PDF export directly into TeXShop now works
properly.

I'm an emacs and AUC-TeX user too. I would like to see support for
emacs in TeXShop, CMacTeX, Textures, etc. After using AUC-TeX, BBEdit
and Alpha just don't do the job. I do all of my editing in emacs and
then fine tune with Textures. Synchronicity makes this fairly easy
although I'd rather not use Classic.

I have been unable to get the new CMacTeX for OS X to work. I follow the
directions for installation and configuration--even installing the CMacTeX
folder in my user directory instead of a more appropriate place, like
"Applications".

The problem is that when setup expands paths, it can find texmf/tex,
texmf/etex, and texmf/pdftex, but cannot find subdirectories of these. I
tried changing permissions but that does not help. It just seems that
setup cannot follow the link to texmf beyond one level of subdirectories.

From: "Tom Kiffe" <tom at kiffe.com>
Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 10:40:35 -0500

I have never used emacs but one should be able to call CMacTeX programs from
within it to perform various tasks. For example, if you want to typeset gentle.tex you can do so from a Terminal window by typing

open -a /Users/tkiffe/CMacTeX_OSX/binaries/CMacTeX gentle.tex

It must be possible to configure emacs to have it execute this command. I always
use the absolute path to my CMacTeX programs because I have numerous copies
of them on my system and I want to launch a specific one. You can use aliases
to simply these commands. For example, if you create this alias

alias cmt open -a /Users/tkiffe/CMacTeX_OSX/binaries/CMacTeX

then you can execute the original command with just

cmt gentle.tex

This open command just sends an OpenDoc Apple Event to the designated application. CMacTeX performs the following actions when it receives an
OpenDoc event.

1) If the file has a .tex extension CMacTeX will typeset the file.
2) If the file has a .dvi extension CMacTeX will call dvips.
3) If the file has an .aux extension CMacTeX will call bibtex.
4) If the file has a .idx extension CMacTeX will call makeindex.

You can't pass any parameters to CMacTeX with the open command, so it
processes the OpenDoc with its current settings.

Short question: has anyone installed the Unix distribution of rtf2latex2e?
./configure couldn't guess my host, how do I specify it?

Long question:

I'm new to the unix-type installation procedures. I saw mention of
rtf2latex2e and thought it sounded interesting, so I made my way over
to <http://members.home.net/setlur/rtf2latex2e/> and downloaded the
Unix source.

The instructions say, of course:
./configure
make
make install

but when I ran ./configure, I got this:

localhost% ./configure
creating cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes

checking for working autoconf... found

Now what?

I've got a complicated layout in Microsoft Word I want to include in a

I'd like to include it in PDF-form, but how do I convert it? When I use
Acrobat Distiller, I only get full page output, but that's not usable for
LaTeX. When I shrink the page size in Word, it still prints a A4 page.

Any ideas?

Well, it gives me a lot of warnings (variable is implicitly extern &
assignment from incompatible pointer type ) and finally ends with this
error:

cc -g -O2 -DINSTALL_DIR=\"/usr/local/rtf2latex2e\" -I../src/include -c -o oledecod.o ../src/common/cole/oledecod.c

I guess this is getting to the point where I should go to darwinos-users...

I'd use Word's option to print selection (under the "Microsoft Word"
tab of the Print dialog). Direct that to an EPS file with the
LaserWriter driver. Use \includegraphics to pull that in to your
